Not only is it more compact, but it comes with two converter cartridges that allow you to play Genesis/MD and Famicom (and possibly NES with a pin converter, it looks a little ridiculous but no probs) carts as well. The cart works on other Super Famicom and SNES consoles, and allows Genesis/MD games to be played on the SNES!

By using the MD adapter, Mega Drive, you can play Genesis software.
By using the FC adapter, you can play Famicom / NES software.
By using the AD adapter, GB Advanced software, you can play (released in May 2013)
